Training Visa
Structured, workplace-based training to build your skills — not a pathway to permanent residency.
Overview
For structured occupational training tied to professional registration, skill-building in an eligible occupation, or capacity building for a role overseas. A recent process change means your sponsor's approval and your training nomination must both be finalised before you can even lodge the visa application — the old approach of applying for everything at once is no longer allowed.
Who it's for
- Skilled workers or professionals needing hands-on training to gain registration
- Anyone building capacity in an eligible occupation or preparing for a role overseas
Key requirements
- An approved Temporary Activities Sponsor, with your training nomination approved before you apply
- A structured training plan matching the duties of your occupation
- Sponsorship, or invitation if sponsored by a Commonwealth agency
- At least 18 years of age at the time of application
This visa cannot be extended and doesn't lead directly to permanent residency — it's a genuine training pathway, not a stepping stone for ongoing work. If your real goal is longer-term Australian experience, a Skills in Demand (482) or Temporary Graduate (485) visa is usually the better fit.
