Health Insurances

International students in Australia must plan not only for tuition, accommodation, and living expenses, but also for healthcare. Since Medicare is not available to international students, Australia requires a dedicated health insurance policy known as Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).

OSHC helps cover medical and hospital costs during your stay, ensuring you have access to essential healthcare while studying. To maintain valid student visa status, both the primary applicant and any accompanying dependents must hold OSHC for the full duration of the academic program.

Students enrolling in short courses of three months or less may be eligible for a tourist visa and can choose a private insurance policy that matches their travel period.

Choosing the Right OSHC Provider

OSHC plans can be purchased as:

  • Single Cover – for the student only
  • Couple Cover – for the student and partner
  • Family Cover – for the student, partner, and dependent children

Policies must be purchased from approved Australian health insurers. Selecting a plan with the right benefits and pricing is important, especially since OSHC must meet minimum government requirements.

OSHC generally does not cover services such as dental, optical, or physiotherapy. Students who need these services may choose OSHC Extras or an additional private health insurance policy.

OSHC providers also cover COVID-19 related illnesses, typically categorised under major organ systems such as lung, chest, kidney, and related treatments.

Expert guidance ensures you choose the most suitable policy based on duration, dependents, and health needs.

Overseas Visitor Health Cover (OVHC)

Individuals travelling to or working in Australia on non-student visas may be required to hold Overseas Visitor Health Cover (OVHC). This applies to visitors, temporary workers, graduates, and certain bridging visa holders.

Common visa subclasses that require OVHC include:

  • Visitor visas: 300, 580, 590, 600, 601
  • Working visas: 482, 485, 400, 401, 476, 489
  • Working Holiday visas: 417, 462
  • Bridging visas (selected categories)

For graduates transitioning from a Student Visa (Subclass 500) to a Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485), OVHC becomes mandatory. OVHC plans differ in cost, coverage, and eligibility, and most include benefits for medically required hospital stays and partial doctor fees.

Unlike OSHC, OVHC allows purchasing general treatment cover, offering benefits for dental, physiotherapy, optical, and other allied health services.

OSHC is typically purchased upfront for the full study duration, while OVHC can often be paid monthly, offering more flexibility for temporary workers and visitors.

PTE Preparation

A strong English proficiency score is essential for studying in English-speaking countries, and thousands of students choose standardized language tests each year to prove their skills. The PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English) is a fully computer-based exam that evaluates your speaking, listening, reading, and writing abilities, and is widely accepted by universities, colleges, and schools across the world.

More than 3,000 global institutions—including those in the UK, Australia, Canada, and the USA—recognize PTE as reliable proof of English ability. Achieving a competitive score opens the door to world-class education and enhances your chances of visa approval.

Student Accommodation

When studying in Australia, you can choose from a variety of accommodation options, each offering different facilities and levels of convenience. While some universities provide limited on-campus housing, many international students prefer off-campus arrangements based on location, lifestyle, and budget.

We help students explore and select the most suitable living option based on study goals, university proximity, and financial preferences.

On-Campus Housing

Many Australian universities offer on-campus housing, though availability is limited. Early application is strongly recommended, ideally during your admission process. Costs generally range from $110 to $280 per week.

Some universities also lease nearby apartments for students, offering additional security and self-catered living options.

Residential Colleges

Residential colleges provide accommodation along with meals, cleaning services, and academic or social support. They are more expensive than traditional halls of residence due to the added services. Residence halls may offer both catered and self-catered options.

Homestay

Homestays allow students to live with an Australian family. This option is popular among secondary students and those enrolled in short-term English programs. Institutions maintain lists of approved homestay providers. Costs typically range from $235 to $325 per week, depending on room type and catering preference.

Hostel & Guesthouse Accommodation

This is one of the more affordable options for students, usually costing $90 to $150 per week. Hostels and guesthouses offer shared facilities and self-catering kitchens.

Rental Properties

Many students choose to rent off-campus, with shared rentals costing $95 to $215 per week, and single rentals averaging $185 to $440 per week.

These properties are often unfurnished, so students should budget for furniture and upfront costs, including security deposits and the first month’s rent.

Individual Tax Return

If you plan to study in Australia for six months or more, you’ll generally be treated as an Australian resident for tax purposes. This comes with certain responsibilities and benefits that are important to understand as a student.

What This Means for You

As a tax resident, you will:

  • Pay tax on income earned in Australia
  • Be taxed at the same rates as Australian residents
  • Access tax benefits such as:
  • The tax-free threshold (depending on how long you stay during the financial year)
  • Potential tax offsets
  • Lower tax rates compared to foreign residents

Individual Tax Return in Australia

Australian students must declare income earned within Australia as well as some forms of international income. However, temporary visa holders (including most international students) follow slightly different rules.

If You’re a Temporary Resident

You do not need to declare most foreign income on your Australian tax return. You will only declare:

  • Income earned in Australia
  • Income from employment or services performed overseas while you are a temporary resident

This ensures your tax return accurately reflects your obligations without unnecessary inclusions.

Lodging Your Tax Return

When preparing your tax return, you’ll need to review:

  • All sources of income
  • All eligible expenses you may claim as deductions

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) uses this information to determine whether you’re owed a refund or required to pay additional tax.
